Kakadu's principal attractions are linked by sealed roads, but with a sturdy 4WD, some time and a sense of adventure, there's far more to see.

Think of Kakadu National Park and you'll more than likely conjure up images of its major highlights: Nourlangie Rock, Ubirr and Yellow Water. These are certainly wonderful features, encapsulating the natural and cultural values that caused the park to be awarded World Heritage status. They are the places you'd visit if you only had time for a one-day dash around.
But, as you'd expect, with a few days to spare there's a lot more to discover
in this 20,000-square kilometre wilderness of trees, wetlands and sandstone
outcrops. While the principal attractions are linked by sealed roads, there
are a number of others that are inaccessible to conventional vehicles. If you
have a robust 4WD, enjoy bush camping and want to see and do it all, then plan
on being there for at least a fortnight.
