Water is a significant feature of a journey along the Victoria Highway from Katherine to Kununurra, the road that carries large numbers of tourists and commercial vehicles from the Top End to the Kimberley.

The relatively unknown highway that connects two of northern Australia's most important towns - Katherine and Kununurra - may be seen merely as a link between two major north-south highways, the Stuart from Port Augusta to Darwin and the Great Northern from Perth and Wyndham. But the Victoria Highway that bridges the gap between these two high profile routes is much more than just a connection, hosting a surprising variety of attractions along its 600 kilometres route.
The two Ks - Katherine and Kununurra - are attractive visitor destinations in their own right. Kununurra, with its population of 6000, has long been noted as the service centre for the Ord River project. In fact it is water, that always precious and too often rare commodity in outback Australia, that is an unusual common bond between the two towns at either end of the Victoria.
