The Man from Snowy River Challenge
Story and photos Freda Nicholls
Corryong, at the base of the Snowy Mountains in northern Victoria, comes alive every April for the legendary three-day Man from Snowy River Challenge. Man and horse are put through a variety of tasks to challenge their riding and bush skills, including whipcraking, horse shoeing, a bareback obstacle course, a timed packhorse event, stock handling and a demanding cross country course.
This year, 55 tough bushmen and women came from all over Australia to compete. Every morning, competitors woke at 5am to the charging tones of the William Tell Overture. Though still dark, the sounds of competitors climbing out of their warm swags, feeding horses and stirring up campfires filled the dawn air with excitement and expectation. Competitors were then placed in colour groups and competed both as teams and individuals, working through the set events.
