Polocrosse championships

On the June long weekend, Camden, NSW, came alive with the NSW Polocrosse Club
Championships. An annual event, they were hosted this year by the Sydney
Polocrosse Club at the Bicentennial Equestrian Park in Camden. The park has
been the pride of the local council since its opening in 2000. Spanning 150
acres, the park boasts a rodeo and campdraft arena, 10 polocrosse fields,
a horse trials and cross country course, a pony club and a dressage arena.
Further improvements are due to commence, and include the construction of
a multi-purpose arena and club house, yards and stable blocks.
The Sydney club hopes the update will be complete in time for the 2006 Nationals
that are scheduled to be held in Camden in September.
This year’s state championships were an all-round success, with 4000 people
attending the weekend of competition. Next year’s championships are to be
held in Muswellbrook, in the Hunter Valley.
Polocrosse originated at Ingleburn, near Camden, when Mr and Mrs Edward Hirst
invented it in 1938. It now has 6000 players in Australia, and is the only
internationally played Australian-made sport, with 26 countries involved.
