Coolup Campdraft
A weekend of yarning, dancing under the stars and some serious campdrafting
By Trish Ainslie and Roger Garwood
A meeting of a small group of people under a flame tree about an hour's drive south of Perth in 1994, with campdrafting demonstrations by Freeman Armitage, the loan of a paddock on Bob Trickett's property and ensuing enthusiastic support of the newly formed Coolup Campdraft Club have turned the event into the largest annual campdraft in Western Australia.
Bob Trickett's wish to get families together for a weekend of yarning, dancing under the stars and some serious campdrafting was again fulfilled last November.
The meeting under the flame tree has turned into a bushfire of support for the event, with competitors travelling from the Pilbara, Albany, Esperance and the eastern goldfields.
Spirited competition ran through until Sunday afternoon and the addition of powerful floodlighting a couple of years ago made the night competition a favourite.
